We recently discovered the brand Escuyer, which not only caters to a very specific need for men, but also has one of the coolest brand aesthetics we’ve seen in awhile. They were nominated for Design of the Year 2014 by the Design Museum of London (which also happens to be one of my favorite museums). I think they serve a needed purpose and do so in a unique way.
Quality Undergarments Delivered Right to Your Door
Escuyer means ‘esquire’ in Old French. Back in the day a squire would attend to the needs of a knight. Today, the menswear brand Escuyer has adopted the name to signify their desire to cater to the undergarment needs of the discerning man. They make briefs, trunks, boxer briefs and short and long sleeve t-shirts in white, grey and black. They also have a range of socks in black, grey and navy. These cotton-based staples are all well made in Portugal.
We love their simple premise of quality goods. You can buy items individually from their e-shop. Alternatively, they offer a subscription service, which leaves them with the responsibility of regularly sending you these essentials so you can get on with other more important things (it also gives you a 10% discount).
Our Favorite Men’s Staples from Escuyer
My favorites are Escuyer’s v-neck tee shirts. They are 100% cotton and unbelievably soft. It’s exactly the kind of tee shirt I would steal from Alex’s drawer and wear myself. Alex loves the trunks as he is very particular about fit and length and feels that Escuyer has hit the nail on the head with their low waist trunk.
If you’re as big a fan of their aesthetic as we are, check out their Tumblr, which reflects their minimalist and timeless cool aesthetic.
Gregory De Harlez, Founder Of Escuyer, Tells Us About His Entrepreneurial Journey
Where are you from and where do you line now?
I was born and raised in Brussels and I still live here. I have travelled and lot and spent some time studying abroad. I learned English in California and graduated from my Masters in Lisbon, Portugal.
What do you do and how did you get there?
I studied International Management and most of my family works in the fashion industry. I would say that I put my business and design skills to use to launch Escuyer. The brand is a mix dof fashion (with our basics) and business (with our subscription concept).
Besides Escuyer, I work one day a week on Aestate, a new project that I’ve recently launched with a friend. It’s a consulting firm specialized in real estate. Our aim is to help owners sell their properties without having to work with realtors.
Where do you find your inspiration and what motivates you?
I would simply say that I find inspiration in my everyday life. I love watching people and what surrounds me. I also have a secret passion, photography. I shoot everything that catches my attention.
What is your go-to outfit and how would you describe your style in three words?
My go-to outfit is a pair of Levi’s Vintage 1954 jeans with a basic white or gray round collar tee shirt and a pair of sneakers. I would describe my style as casual, simple and timeless.
To grow, we are going to invest the French and British markets.
What big project are you currently working on?
To grow our business, we are going to invest the French and British markets. Escuyer is starting to be known in London since our branding was selected by the Design Museum as one of the best brand identity of 2014, which allowed us to be shown there for over 5 months.
Last words? But we just started!
