Military-Inspired: Realm & Empire

We often talk about workwear and heritage menswear on the blog. But what does that mean? The way I see it, it’s all about taking a piece of vintage utilitarian clothing, be it a chore garment or a uniform, updating it and turning it into something that’s relevant in this day and age. And that’s exactly what British label Realm & Empire offers.

The brand is rooted in history and vintage British military-wear, and launched its first collection in 2012 after establishing a unique partnership with Imperial War Museums, which gives the designers access to the National Archives. As Stephen Gill, one of the co-founders, explained to me: each Realm & Empire garment is historically, militarily and sartorially referenced. In other words, he strives to offer contemporary menswear that is as authentic as possible and true to the brand’s inspiration.

Each garment is historically, militarily and sartorially referenced.

Besides how on point the brand’s garments look collection after collection, what really impresses me about Realm & Empire is their creative process. Each new season starts with a visit to the War Museums where the team studies archived military garments, photographs and artefacts. This first step helps the designers to identify the type of pieces they’d like to include to the collection, before updating them and adding their own twist to turn them into something that today’s modern man would be proud to wear.

More on the brand’s process in this video by Highsnobiety:

Their latest AW collection called Flyers is inspired by WWII aviation and more specifically the Battle of Britain and the parachutists of the British airborne divisions. I absolutely love the coats and jackets for the season. The Desfort two-tone Utility Overshirt (featured on the first picture) and the Panton Pilot Jacket (first image below) are my favorites. The cut of both jackets is very flattering and the color contrast make the garments pop in a sophisticated yet very rugged way.

Because we’re such fans of the collection and thought that you’d love it too, we struck a deal with the Realm & Empire team who’s happy to offer a 20% discount to our readers until October 17.
